Family counselling emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health. What the different schools of family counselling have in common is a belief that, regardless of the origin of the problem, and regardless of whether the clients consider it an "individual" or "family" issue, connecting families in solutions is often positive. This is done by developing your communication skills, learning to solve problems more effectively, identifying your strengths, and overcoming your challenges. This involvement of families is commonly accomplished by their direct participation in the peer counselling session. The skills of the family counsellor include the ability to influence conversations in a way that foster the support and wisdom to the individual so they are able to communicate more effectively to the family.

Family counselling considers relationships with others, and how the family unit influences the individual. This focuses on our primary relationships within the family. The first step is to identify the family hierarchy. Ideally the family is led by the primary care giver and partner. An unhealthy family may form alliances that interrupt the healthy family model. The value in family counselling is to hear what each member is dealing with, and doing about various issues in their family. When working with a counsellor, family members can often hear what other family members are saying.

Our role at Balanced Life Therapy is to support families to identify problematic behaviours that undermine this healthy structure. We help to put the power back to where it belongs. The purpose of our support is to foster healthy positive relationships by exploring what the needs of the family are; allowing each member autonomy, while being a part of the family unit as a whole. Our practice as peer counsellors seeks to present core principles, as they apply to family counselling. We encourage individuals to learn new behaviours and ways of thinking that meet their needs and allow them to function effectively in their lives. We all learn differently.
