Despite stress often being thought of as a subjective experience, levels of stress are readily measurable using various tests. Many practical stress management techniques are available, some for use by health practitioners and others for self-help, which may help an individual to reduce stress, provide postiive feelings of being in control of one's life and promote general well-being.
Reactions to trauma may last for days, weeks or even longer. It is normal to have strong emotional or physical reactions following a distressing or frightening event. In fact, these feelings are part of the healing process. There are strategies to help people cope with and recover from these experiences. Are you re-experiencing, reliving what happened? Are you in a place of avoidance by staying away from reminders? Do you suffer from hyper-arousal, feelings of anxiousness or jumpy? At Balanced life Therapy in Barrie we believe recovering from emotional and psychological events takes time. We encourage you to give yourself time to heal and to mourn the losses you’ve experienced. We do not force the healing process. We are here to support you to be patient with the pace of your recovery. Finally, through stress management, we will support you to be prepared for the difficult and volatile emotions. It is imperative that you allow yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling without judgment or guilt. Remember that everyone’s response to trauma is different. Don’t bottle up your feelings, you may want to talk with someone you trust, feel safe with that can support you with no judgement.
It is important that you recognize that you have been through a distressing or frightening experience and that you will have a reaction to it. Through recovery we assist you in understanding that you will feel bad for a time, but that it will also eventually pass. We ask that you remind yourself daily that you are coping and not become discouraged when you get upset. Don’t overuse alcohol or drugs to help you cope. Through cognitive behavioural therapy and stress management you can gradually confront what has happened and you will not have to go out of your way to avoid certain situations.
Self-care is a very important part of your journey to recovery, make time for regular exercise; it helps cleanse the body and mind of tension. When you feel exhausted, we encourage you to make sure you set aside time to rest. De-stress by using relaxation techniques such as, breathing or meditation, or do things you enjoy such as listening to music or gardening.
