Youth We Support

Child Therapy Focus
Child therapy helps children understand their feelings, build emotional skills, and learn healthier ways to express themselves. It also supports parents in understanding their child’s behaviour and emotional needs, often helping the whole family.
At Balanced Life Therapy, we focus on understanding what the child is experiencing rather than labeling them. Therapy supports challenges like anxiety, behaviour, emotional regulation, family stress, trauma, school issues, grief, and communication difficulties, helping children feel safer, calmer, and more connected.

Inside Child Therapy
The first step may begin with a free 20-minute consultation where a parent or caregiver can talk about what is going on, ask questions, and explore whether child therapy at Balanced Life Therapy feels like the right fit. From there, therapy is tailored to the child’s age, developmental stage, emotional needs, and family situation.
You can expect a warm, respectful, and supportive environment where children are met with patience and care. Some children open up gradually. Others communicate more through behaviour, play, or emotional expression. Therapy may include emotional support, coping tools, parent guidance, trauma-informed work, and strategies to help children feel safer, more understood, and more able to manage daily challenges.

In-Person & Online
Balanced Life Therapy offers child therapy in Barrie, Ontario at 27 Gowan St., as well as online child therapy across Ontario when virtual care is appropriate for the child and family. This flexibility helps parents choose the format that best fits scheduling, transportation, comfort, and the specific needs of the child.
Some families prefer in-person support because children can engage more naturally face to face. Others benefit from the convenience of virtual sessions, especially when travel, routine, or family logistics make in-person appointments harder. Both options can help families access meaningful support.
At Balanced Life Therapy, child therapy is supportive, relational, and tailored to each child’s age and needs. We use developmentally appropriate approaches to help children express feelings in ways that feel safe and natural for them.
Our collaborative approach may include working with the child, supporting parents, and strengthening family understanding. We view behaviour as communication and help children and families understand emotional needs while building healthier coping and connection.
CBT helps people identify the thought patterns, beliefs, and habits that contribute to anger, frustration, and emotional escalation. It can be especially helpful for noticing the link between situations, thoughts, feelings, and reactions.
DBT teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, and improving relationships. It can be very helpful for people who feel overwhelmed quickly or struggle to regulate emotional reactions in the moment.
For some people, anger is connected to trauma, chronic stress, painful past experiences, or nervous system overwhelm. Trauma-informed therapy helps explore these patterns safely and with care.

Signs Behind Behaviour
Children often express distress through behaviour because they do not yet have the language, insight, or confidence to describe complex feelings in words. Anxiety may look like clinginess, irritability, or school refusal. Sadness may look like withdrawal, anger, or shutting down. Trauma may show up as fear, big reactions, sleep problems, or difficulty feeling safe.
Therapy can help because it creates a space where behaviour is understood in context rather than simply punished or dismissed. When children feel safe, understood, and supported, they are often better able to regulate emotions, communicate needs, and begin healing from what has been difficult.
You can learn how to talk about hard things more openly, honestly, and respectfully without getting pulled into the same painful cycle.
Therapy can help you understand what happens during conflict and build new ways of responding that feel safer and more productive.
As you begin to feel more understood, it can become easier to reconnect emotionally and rebuild a sense of partnership.
When trust has been damaged, counselling can help you talk about what happened, understand the impact, and begin the work of repair.
You can start to understand your goals as a couple and make changes that support a stronger, healthier relationship over time.
Therapy can help you stop feeling like opponents and begin approaching challenges with more understanding, shared responsibility, and care.
